چکیده
• Students from different ethnic (income) groups have heterogeneous school preferences. Heterogeneous preferences are an important determinant of segregation. Ability tracking is another main determinant. Quotas reduce segregration but leave demanded seats empty. This paper examines heterogeneity between and social quantifies the importance this for We use rich data secondary-school match in Amsterdam. Measuring school segregation
Using only ordinal axioms, we characterize several multigroup school segregation indices: the Atkinson Indices for the class of school districts with a given xed number of ethnic groups and the Mutual Information Index for the class of all districts. Properties of other school segregation indices are also discussed. In an empirical application, we document a weakening of the e¤ect of ethnicity...
متن کاملPreference heterogeneity and optimal capital income taxation
We analytically and quantitatively examine a prominent justi cation for capital income taxation: goods preferred by those with high ability ought to be taxed. We study an environment where commodity taxes are allowed to be nonlinear functions of income and consumption and nd that, when ability is positively related to a preference for a good, optimal marginal commodity taxes on this good may b...

This paper presents a simple rational expectations model of intertemporal asset pricing relating instability of stock return characteristics to heterogeneity in investor preferences. Heterogeneity is likely to generate declining aggregate relative risk aversion. This leads to variability in expected asset returns, volatility, and autocorrelation. The stronger this variability is, the more heter...

Available online 26 October 2013 Segregationmodels often focus onprivate racial preference but overlook the institutional context. This paper represents an effort to move beyond the preference centricity. In this paper, an ideal Pigovian regulatory intervention is emulated and added into Schelling’s (1971) classic spatial proximity model of racial segregation, with an aim to preserve collective...

Although trends in the racial segregation of schools are well documented, less is known about trends in income segregation. We use multiple data sources to document trends in income segregation between schools and school districts. Between-district income segregation of families with children enrolled in public school increased by over 15% from 1990 to 2010. Within large districts, between-scho...
